About
Assigned Male – The Incredible Adventures of Stephie (Who Happens To Be Trans), originally Assignée garçon and more commonly known as Assigned Male, is an ongoing webcomic by the French-Canadian artist Sophie Labelle about a young transgender girl named Stephie. While many have praised the comic for tackling issues facing young transgender people, others have criticized its heavy-handed message as well as an unrealistic portrayal of its characters.
Premise
Assigned Male follows the life of Stephie, an 11 year old male-to-female transgender girl. The comic features her talking to her family and friends about transgender issues, and her struggles with her conflicting gender identity.[1] Additionally, some comics in the series depart from the story and contain messages about various transgender topics of interest.
History
Assigned Male was first published online in French as Assignée garçon, and premiered on Tumblr on August 15th, 2014.[2] On September 13, it was launched in English as Assigned Male – The Incredible Adventures of Stephie (Who Happens To Be Trans). On August 31st, 2014, a Facebook[3] page was created for the comic, accumulating upwards of 30,000 likes in the next two years. In early 2015, a Patreon page for the comic was created, reaching over $1,231 in subscriptions per month by the next year.[4] In August, a Twitter[6] account for the comic was created, garnering more than 1,200 followers within seven months.
Reception
On March 24th, 2015, the feminist news site Every Day Feminism[14] listed the comic in an article title "8 Comics That Remind Us to Throw Out the Gender Binary." On May 27th, Redditor SockMice submitted a post titled "Here's why I think the webcomic 'Assigned Male' is really, really bad" to the /r/transgender[15] subreddit, which criticized the Labelle for being "hypocritical" and for using a child protagonist to discuss adult-oriented issues facing the trans community. In January 2015, a page for the comic was created on The Bad Webcomics Wiki.[9][10] In April, a page mocking the comic was launched on Encyclopedia Dramatica.[11] Additionally, the comic has been the subject of two general threads on the Kiwifarms forum.[12][13]
