"Posting Their L's" and "Posting Their W's" Gimmick Accounts

"Posting Their L's Online" Gimmick Accounts refers to gimmick social media pages that collect social media posts that can be interpreted as if a person inadvertently admits to failing at something – "taking an L" – while not personally considering their post to be a fail story. These gimmick accounts gained popularity on Twitter starting in late 2020, with "Posting Their W's" accounts also gaining popularity.
History
On October 17th, 2020, gimmick Twitter[1] account Women Posting Their L's Online (@WomenPostingLs) was launched. On the same day, the account made the first tweet,[2] posting a screenshot of a tweet that could be perceived as a fail story ("taking an L") (shown below, left). The tweet received over 110 retweets and 1,200 likes. On the same day, @WomenPostingLs made another post[3] that received over 240 retweets and 3,100 likes (shown below, right).
Starting in November 2020, the account gained notable popularity on Twitter with multiple tweets exceeding the 5,000 like mark. For example, on November 12th, 2020, @WomenPostingLs posted a tweet[4] that received over 880 retweets and 17,400 likes in one month (shown below, left). On December 8th, the account posted a tweet[5] that received over 1,600 retweets and 21,700 likes in one week (shown below, right).
Starting in mid-November 2020, more "Posting their Ls Online" accounts were created on Twitter, including Journalists Posting Their Own Ls (@journospostls),[6] Coomers Posting Their L’s Online (@coomerspostingl)[7] land E-Girls Posting Their L’s Online (@egirlspostingls)[8] (tweet examples shown below).
Features
"Posting Their Ls Online" accounts collect social media posts that can be interpreted as if a person inadvertently admits to failing at something while not personally considering their post to be a fail story. In some examples, fake posts have been posted by the accounts, for example, on December 9th, 2020, @WomenPostingLs posted[9] a screenshot of a fake #GoBaldforBml post.
Traffic
As one December 15th, 2020, @WomenPostingLs garnered over 117,000 followers on Twitter. Other notable accounts include @JournosPostLs (59,500 followers), @coomerspostingl (21,600 followers) and @egirlspostingls (10,100 followers).
