Overview
The Coffin of Andy and Leyley is a psychological horror video game developed by Nemlei using the RPG Maker program. The game follows two cannibalistic siblings, Andrew and Ashley Graves, who are in a toxic codependent relationship. A demo for Episode 1 of the game was released on itch.io and Steam in late March 2023. The game gained a significant following online over the following months as YouTubers began to Let's Play it, inspiring fan art and other fan content. The relationship between the two characters has inspired speculation that the two are incestuous, also inspiring rule 34 fan art of the two main characters.
History
On March 25th, 2023, a demo for chapter one of the horror game The Coffin of Andy and Leyley, produced by independent game developer Nemlei, was released on Itch.io[1] and Steam.[2] According to the game's Fandom[3] page, the first chapter takes place following a pandemic, which caused Andy and Ashley, two siblings, to be locked in an abandoned apartment for months. In order to avoid starvation, Ashley cannibalizes a cultist.
On the day of the demo's release, YouTuber[4] Alpha Beta Gamer posted a playthrough, garnering over 35,000 views in seven months (shown below).
Online Presence
On March 26th, 2023, a subreddit for the game, /r/CoffinofAndyandLeyley,[7] was created, garnering over 7,400 members in seven months.
Let's Plays
The Coffin of Andy and Leyley became notably popular among Let's Players on YouTube throughout 2023, greatly helping spread the game online. On March 26th, 2023, YouTuber[5] ManlyBadassHero played the game, garnering over 2.1 million views in seven months (shown below, left). On March 29th, YouTuber[6] GamingWithKev posted a video that gained over 475,000 views in the same rough span of time (shown below, right).
Fan Content
As the game's fanbase grew, people began making artwork and fan content referencing the game and its characters. Much of this content is posted to /r/CoffinOfAndyandLeyley. On April 23rd, 2023, YouTuber[8] Ducksen posted a fan animation based on the game, garnering over 300,000 views in six months (shown below).
On September 24th, Redditor u/bushmaster991 posted a piece of artwork to /r/CoffinofAndyandLeyley[8] depicting the two siblings holding hands, garnering over 900 upvotes in a month (shown below, left). On October 13th, X[9] user @sakia707 posted artwork that gained over 200 likes in four days (shown below, right).
Incest Speculation
While the first chapter of Andy and Leyley does not explicitly confirm that the two siblings are in an incestuous relationship, the codependency of the two characters, particularly Ashley's attitudes towards Andy, has inspired speculation about whether or not they are incestuous, becoming a major talking point in the fandom and inspiring numerous works of fan art and content depicting them in such a relationship. On October 16th, 2023, X[10] user @_rawrell posted a screenshot from the game that seems to imply incest, writing, ">horror game >look inside >incest," garnering over 21,800 likes in a day (shown below).
