Get A Girlfriend Son or Damn Nobody Want U FR😭😭 refers to a webcomic made up of stock images showing a father yelling at his son to get a girlfriend, followed by the mom saying "or a boyfriend! he's bi" and both of them making fun of their son for being unable to get a partner, exclaiming, "damn nobody want u fr" and "I'm saying like😭😭." The images first became the subject of a Brazillian meme making a similar joke in 2018, seeing increased use as an exploitable in 2020 throughout 2021 via recaptioning.

Origin

On October 18th, 2018, Brazillian Facebook^[1] meme page Grodosbova posted a meme using two stock images, one of a 3D father yelling at his crying son^[2] and another of a mother and father fighting as the boy cries between them,^[3] with a caption that roughly translates as the father saying, "find a girlfriend son," and the mother saying, "he's ugly," gaining over 4,400 shares and 1,200 reactions in four years (shown below).

On February 29th, 2020, Twitter users @psiuwolf and @reactjpg posted English edits of the meme with the father saying "stop being stupid boy" and the mother saying "he is American." On February 22nd, 2021, Tumblr^[4] user gay-irl posted a four-panel version of the meme where the father tells the son to get a girlfriend, the mother says he's gay, then the father tells him to get a girlfriend, followed by the mother saying he's ugly, gaining over 19,171 notes in a year (shown below). On August 9th, 2021, Redditor ExampleText02 posted a remade version of the meme using black text boxes to recaption it on the /r/me_irl^[5] subreddit, gaining over 1,100 upvotes in roughly five months.

On the same day, Instagram^[6] page cowboygokulandcomedy posted an edited version of the meme where the mother says the son is bi and then the two make fun of the boy for being unable to get a partner, gaining over 500 likes in five months. This is the earliest known version of the meme.

Spread

The meme by cowboygokulandcomedy was reposted a number of times in August 2021, including to Tumblr^[7] by user dojacat the next day on August 10th, gaining over 21,800 notes in five months. That month, people began redrawing and changing the captions on the meme to reference new characters and change the context of the joke. For example, on August 9th, Redditor ViraLCyclopezz posted a caption-changed meme to /r/LeagueOfMemes,^[8] gaining over 4,200 upvotes in five months. On August 18th, Twitter^[9] user @kiddycup posted a redraw of the meme using characters from Evangelion, gaining over 101,000 likes and 16,000 retweets in five months (shown below).

On August 20th, 2021, Tumblr^[10] user aakiwa posted a version using Genshin Impact characters, gaining over 766 notes in five months (shown below, left). On August 22nd, Twitter^[11] user @anncxsuu posted a version using characters from Project SEKAI gaining over 900 likes in the same span of time (shown below, right).
