Skamtebord

About

Skamtebord refers to a style of image macro in which a person texts another person, often a celebrity, and they respond with a misspelled word related to their profession. Its name is derived from an image macro featuring Tony Hawk in which a person texts the famous skateboarder and he replies "Skamtebord." The subreddit /r/skamtebord was created to celebrate memes in that vein as well as examples of unprompted, out-of-context text messages and internet comments.

Origin

On October 19th, 2019, Redditor greatdong posted an image macro featuring a Tony Hawk tweet in which the skateboarder tweets out his phone number followed by a text message exchange where a person asks him "how's it going?" and Hawk replies "skamtebord." The post gained over 88,000 points in /r/comedyheaven^[1] (shown below).

Spread

On February 23rd, 2020, the subreddit /r/skamtebord^[2] launched, becoming a subreddit dedicated to "Humor derived from an unprompted word or phrase." Many of the posts there are parodies of the original "skamtebord" post. For example, on September 9th, 2020, user sweatychickennugget^[3] posted a parody featuring Sayori from Doki Doki Literature Club, gaining over 9,800 points (shown below, left). On April 16th, 2021, Redditor Girto_^[4] posted an example featuring Radiohead, gaining 1,200 points (shown below, right).

Other popular posts on the subreddit show non-celebrities reacting with humorous typos, which may or may not be doctored. For example, on May 29th, 2020, a Redditor posted to /r/skamteboard^[5] a doctored image of a text message with PetSmart in which they sent a picture of a wild rabbit and PetSmart replied "Bnuuy." The post gained over 3,200 points (shown below). This post launched the Bnuuy meme. On March 23rd, 2021, Redditor rzx0 posted a screenshot from an /r/AskReddit thread where a person asked "What's a useless geography fact?" and another replied "Belgium."^[6] The post gained over 11,000 points (shown below, right).
